Abstract

Since the first successful reimplantation of a completely amputated upper arm was carried out in 1962 by Malt and his colleagues, a number of repairs have been attemped with varying degree of success.
Even if the viability of the replanted limb is maintained many complications may intervene during -or after operation and result in a poorly functioning limb. The keystone of restoration of viability .of severed limbs is the anastomosis of both arteries and veins, but the extent of the nerve injury -and the success of its repair usually determine the final disbility of the replanted limb.
In Korea, we carried out the first successul reimplantation of a completely amputated thigh on February 27, 1976.
